My Top 3 Sunscreen options
Finding hormone and sun safe options for your sun exposure can be very hard as most products available on the market contain harmful chemicals that are called “endocrine disruptors” which means that they can mess up with your hormones.
Some ingredient names to look out for in particular are: oxybenzone (BP-3) or octinoxate (OMC). These can sometimes have different names such as benzophenone-3 or octyl methoxycinnamate. Many studies have proven that these pesky tongue-twisting chemicals enter the blood stream via the skin and because they have been detected in urine, blood, semen, and even amniotic fluid and breast milk, they have raised some alarms in terms of embryo development and other organ systems. When it comes to hormones, these have been seen to have some impact on thyroid, reproductive hormone levels, therefore on fertility and even on puberty especially as they have seen to have an influence on testosterone levels.
While some of the studies are non definitive, the approach of “better safe than sorry” is what I prefer to always go for. I bet you agree.
I personally started this journey of research into sunscreens as I was building my family, continuing on with my years in practice supporting my clients whilst informing them on environmental factors to look out for. So, I have found there are quite a number of safe options on the market these days, which is very good news. Below are three products that I have personally used and recommended a lot for different reasons.

TruKid (eczema) sunscreen
This is a wonderful product for the whole family. The reason for it is that it contains the non-nano form of zinc oxide, which creates a safe mechanical barrier for UVA and UVB rays. There is non eczema version available too but this one has a pleasant “spreadability” on the skin.

Shade All Natural Sunscreen
Similarly to TruKid, this sun cream uses non nano zinc oxide, which is better for the environment and coral reef, plus there is not much research around when it comes to nano particles. It comes in a handy (and non plastic) container which can be nicely re-used in the house. It’s not as easy to apply on the skin as TruKid but still a useful travel and sun companion to easily pack in your bags, as they also have a smaller version.

Green People sun lotion
In general, Green People’s products are wonderful. They all tend to have a majority of organic ingredients which are carefully sourced and mostly plant based. This sun lotion is the closest to a “conventional” sun cream in terms of feel and ease of applicability but it does contain a small amount of nano titanium dioxide, as opposed to “non nano” as explained for the other two products. This sunscreen provides less of a white sheen on the skin and so it can be handy if you need to look great by the swimming pool :).
